Between Risk and Resignation

Spiritual aspirants should rid themselves of all ego and be free from malice towards others. They should try to see the same Atma (Spirit) as inherent in all. They should abstain from reviling others. If you slander anyone, it is tantamount to slandering God Him[Her]self.

Guru Charitra

Each of us have contradictory urges and drives that make it very difficult to find peace and fulfillment. We want financial stability and physical safety, but we also crave adventure and excitement. Adventure and excitement necessarily mean accepting a certain level of risk, or exposure to a certain level of harm (i.e., the opposite of security and stability). So we find ourselves walking a fine line between boredom on the one hand and recklessness on the other. Most people forever cycle between these two poles. This is not necessarily a problem, but it is useful to just notice this dynamic and our place on the spectrum at any given point in time.

This evening, do you find yourself in the doldrums, looking for excitement and stimulation? Or do you find yourself having taken a great risk and perhaps regretting it? Can you find your own happy medium between risk and resignation? Take a look at your life, as it is right now, and find ways in which you could take acceptable, productive risks. Look also for places where you have unnecessary, harmful risk. Make peace with the level of risk that seems right for you, in all aspects of life.
